A number of minor sports organizations, inlcuding one in Arnprior, have been victimized by an email scam that targeted the groups’ treasurers.
In a news release Tuesday, the Renfrew County detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police said it received a complaint from an Arnprior sports asscociation in April 2019. The association reported falling victim to a “spear phishing” fraud, in which spoofed emails were sent to the association’s treasurer, directing the electronic transfer of money to fake vendors.

A lengthy investigation by the Renfrew County OPP and the service’s anti-rackets branch resulted in the arrest of a Toronto couple. They were charged with a series of offences, including fraud over $5,000.
It’s alleged by the OPP that they victimized “multiple” minor sports organizations.
During the past year, the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre has received 1,500 complaints about about email frauds which caused more than $29 million in financial losses.
