The residents of an east-end apartment building were evacuated safely after a fire broke out in the kitchen of a fourth-floor unit on Tuesday afternoon.
Ottawa Fire Services received a call from the alarm company of an apartment building at 1680 Walkley Rd., while 911 calls reported smoke coming from one of the apartments.
Firefighters encountered heavy smoke on the fourth floor and declared a fire at 2:22 p.m. A fire on the stove of one of the apartments was extinguished two minutes later. Firefighters searched to confirm there were no people left inside the building and ventilated the smoke.
The fire was declared under control at 2:29 p.m., but firefighters remained on the scene to ensure there were no further extensions, ventilate the remaining smoke and salvage property to prevent water damage.
Ottawa Fire Services commended the residents for safely evacuating and calling 911.
“With information from the callers, firefighters were able to rapidly locate the source of the fire and ensure all occupants of the building were safe.”
