North Bay-Parry Sound remains under lockdown as well, and officials have now confirmed a second case of B.1.351 in that region.
There were 339 new COVID-19 cases confirmed in Toronto Thursday, 204 in Peel and 106 in York region.
There were 64 new cases in Ottawa, according to provincial data.
There are often discrepancies between Ontario’s daily case counts and those logged by local public health units while the province is completing its data migration to a central system. Ottawa Public Health is using its own system in the meantime, which pulls local data each afternoon and reports the numbers around 12:30 p.m. the following day. OPH says its data is typically the most up-to-date.
The Eastern Ontario Health Unit region saw a troubling spike in cases, with 20 new confirmed infections Thursday, the largest increase in daily case counts in that region, which includes Cornwall and Alexandria, in several weeks.
There were five new cases in Hastings, four in Kingston, and four in Renfrew County. No new cases were confirmed in Leeds, Grenville and Lanark.
Ontario conducted 66,351 tests in the previous 24-hour period with a 2.0 per cent positivity rate, which is trending down after hitting 4.2 per cent earlier this week.
Another 1,094 cases were resolved in the previous 24 hours. There have been 297,311 confirmed cases in Ontario since the beginning of the pandemic, and of those, 280,324 are now considered resolved.
Ontario’s death toll is 6,916, which includes 437 deaths in Ottawa.
