The annual Relay for Life event at Ottawa schools to raise money for the Canadian Cancer Society is like everything else this year: virtual.
But that seems only fitting for the students at the Ottawa Catholic School Board’s virtual high school, who have organized an event for Thursday.

“Even with the pandemic and everything, cancer doesn’t stop,” says Brianna Peacock, 17, one of the organizers. She lost an uncle to cancer. “It’s so prevalent in our community, so many people have lost their lives.”
Peacock says she was eager to volunteer. “It really touched my heart, honestly.”
It’s been a challenge organizing the event with other students on Zoom, but on the other hand she got to meet students virtually from across the city, Peacock says. “I’m from Kanata, but I am talking to people from Orléans.”
The board’s virtual school has 5,300 secondary students spread across the city.
Organizers have cooked up lots of ideas for the two-hour live event. Students were asked to send videos of themselves performing, for instance. They received videos of students singing, playing guitar and juggling soccer balls with their feet, Peacock says.
